North American west coast Indian tribes, such as the Kwakiutl, hold
potlatch ceremonies where gifts are given and personal property is
destroyed in order to show financial wealth. Events such as weddings
and funerals are occasions for these ceremonies. They include dancing,
food, speeches and gift-giving. Guests who receive gifts are then
obliged to host potlatches where they try to give even more costly
gifts to show their own wealth.
